Dr. Alex McFarland brings the light of Christ to the darkness pushing Americans to suicide
‘In this era, believers are strategically positioned to help people escape the grip of hopelessness,’ says McFarland
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Friends and family of New York native and domestic violence counselor Chianti Means are mourning the loss of Means and her two young children after she stepped over the guard rail at Niagara Falls while holding her children and plunged to their deaths. This traumatic incident came as a shock to their loved ones, with one commenting, “You really never know what anybody is going through.” Tragically, suicide is all too common in modern society — suicide is one of the leading causes of death in America, with one death every 11 minutes.
Youth, culture and religion expert Dr. Alex McFarland is all too aware of the culture of suicide permeating American society. Through Alex McFarland Ministries, McFarland works to reach people — particularly teens — in the throes of despair and share the Gospel message.
“Feelings of hopelessness, sadness and ‘major depressive episodes’ have increased by 150% in the lives of American teens since COVID-19,” commented McFarland. “Here, in the world’s most prosperous country, almost 60% of all adolescents grapple with stress and feelings of helplessness about life. Watching our friends and loved ones suffer through depression and other mental ailments can be heartbreaking. However, the Church has Christ’s mandate to proclaim the truth — and in this era, believers are strategically positioned to help people escape the grip of hopelessness. Psalm 34:18-19 says ‘The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.’”
Alex McFarland currently co-hosts Exploring the Word on the American Family Radio Network, airing daily on nearly 200 radio stations across the U.S. He is also the host of the “Alex McFarland Show,” which airs weekly on NRB TV and YouTube. The “Alex McFarland Show” podcast is available here.
McFarland and theologian Bert Harper, veteran cohosts of the nationally syndicated broadcast Exploring the Word, are proud to announce the launch of their latest book, “100 Bible Questions and Answers for Families.” A follow-up to their previous work, “100 Bible Questions and Answers,” this powerful new book promises to guide through some of the most common challenges and queries people have about God, the Bible, and Christian living.
Alex McFarland has authored or co-authored more than 20 books, including the newly released “100 Bible Questions & Answers for Families,” “10 Issues that Divide Christians,” “The God You Thought You Knew,” “10 Answers for Skeptics,” “10 Answers for Atheists,” “The 21 Toughest Questions Your Kids Will Ask About Christianity,” published by Focus on the Family, and more. He directs Biblical Worldview and teaches in the School of Practical Government for Charis Bible College, located in Woodland Park, CO.
McFarland is a frequent guest on Fox News and has been interviewed by other media outlets including Fox and Friends, Focus On The Family radio, NPR’s All Things Considered, The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC, CBN, La Vie (France), and various news outlets including CBS, FOX, NBC, CSPAN, SRN, and the Associated Press (AP) wire service.
