Should I anoint my home with oil?

An online listener recently asked if they should anoint their home with oil. The simple answer is that there is nothing wrong with doing this, but the Bible does not teach that it is required for believers. Our faith and protection come from God Himself, not from oil or a special ritual.

In the Bible, oil was often used as a symbol of God’s blessing, healing, and dedication. For example, James 5:14 says, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (NKJV). Oil was also used in the Old Testament when priests and kings were set apart for God’s service.

Some Christians choose to anoint their homes as a way of praying and dedicating their house to the Lord. This can be a meaningful act of faith. However, it is important to understand that the power is not in the oil itself. The oil is only a symbol. God’s presence comes through the Holy Spirit and through faith in Jesus Christ.

If you decide to anoint your home, you do not need anything expensive or special. Many people simply use olive oil. As you walk through your home, you can pray for God’s peace, protection, wisdom, and blessing over your family. Some believers place a small amount of oil on doorposts while praying. Others simply pray in each room.

There is no required Scripture to read, but many Christians use verses such as Joshua 24:15: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (NKJV). Psalm 91 is also often read as a prayer for God’s protection.

Most importantly, remember that a close relationship with Christ matters more than any outward act. Reading God’s Word, praying, and living in obedience to Him are the true foundation of a godly home. Anointing your home can be a personal expression of faith, but it is not commanded in Scripture and should never replace trust in God Himself.
