As virtual reality becomes more common, Christians are asking important moral questions. One question is whether relationships in virtual reality with the opposite sex count as adultery. The Bible gives us clear principles to help answer this, even if the technology is new.
Jesus taught that sin is not just about physical contact. In Matthew 5:28, He said, “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This shows that God cares about our intentions and desires, not just our actions. If a virtual relationship involves sexual desires meant only for marriage, it crosses into sin.
The Bible defines marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman. Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” Even if a virtual relationship does not involve physical touch, it can still break the faithfulness God wants in marriage. Emotional unfaithfulness can be as harmful as physical unfaithfulness.
Some people think virtual relationships are not real because they happen online. But the people, emotions, and conversations are real. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” When someone gives attention and affection to another person instead of their spouse, even online, their heart is moving away from God’s plan.
People might say that virtual relationships aren’t real, but, in fact, they are very much real, comprised of living, breathing people, emotions, and words. Proverbs 4:23 says “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life”. When you lavish your heart and attention on someone other than your partner, your heart starts to stray away from God’s plan.
The same principles apply to unmarried believers. First Thessalonians 4:3 says, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.” Virtual relationships that lead to lust or sexual fantasy do not honor God’s call to holiness.
Christians are called to reflect Christ everywhere. Whether in person, online, or in virtual reality, faithfulness is important. God’s grace is there when we fail, but His Word calls us to purity and integrity that honor God and protect marriage.
