People often ask if Jesus had brothers and sisters. The Bible gives a clear answer. According to the New Testament, Jesus grew up in a real family, and He did have siblings. These were not spiritual or symbolic brothers and sisters. They were His earthly family members who were born to Mary and Joseph after Jesus’ birth.
In Matthew 13:55-56 the people in Jesus’ hometown asked, “Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us?” This passage names four brothers and mentions sisters, meaning that Jesus had at least two sisters.
Some traditions teach that these were cousins or close relatives. While we respect the desire to honor Mary, the biblical text does not support that idea. The Greek word used here for brothers is adelphoi. It normally refers to siblings who share the same mother or father. There is no indication in the passage that it means anything different.
Mark 6:3 gives a similar list of names and again speaks of His sisters. The people of Nazareth knew the whole family. They were surprised that someone they had watched grow up was now teaching with such authority. If Jesus’ brothers and sisters were only cousins, this would not make sense in the context of the passage.
Another interesting fact comes from John 7. Jesus’ brothers did not believe in Him during His early ministry. Later, after the resurrection, they did believe. James, the brother of Jesus, even became a leader in the early church and wrote the New Testament book of James. Another brother, Judas, is historically known as the author of the New Testament book of Jude.
None of this takes away from Mary’s special role. She was chosen by God to give birth to the Savior. At the same time, the Bible presents her as a faithful wife and mother who raised a normal family after Jesus’ birth.
So yes, Jesus did have brothers and sisters. The Bible supports this clearly, and these verses remind us that the Son of God stepped into real human life so that He could save us fully and completely.
