If God is All-knowing and Predestined all Believers, Why Do We Pray?

If God already knows everything and has a plan, some people wonder why prayer matters. But prayer is not a formality; it is a relationship. Jesus Himself prayed constantly, and if the Son of God prayed, then prayer must be essential for us too. First Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV) says, “Pray without ceasing.” God commands prayer because it is one of the main ways we connect with Him.

Prayer is not about informing God of something He doesn’t know. Matthew 6:8 (NKJV) says, “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.” So why pray? First, prayer changes us. It brings our hearts into alignment with God’s will. When we pray, we surrender our worries, confess our sins, and express trust in our heavenly Father. Prayer builds our faith.

Second, God chooses to accomplish His will through our prayers. He invites us to partner with Him in His work. James 5:16 says, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Even in a world where God is sovereign, our prayers matter. God uses the prayers of His people to bring comfort, healing, protection, and salvation.

Third, prayer deepens our relationship with God. Imagine having a friend you never speak to. The relationship wouldn’t grow. God wants us to know Him, not just know about Him. Philippians 4:6 calls us to bring everything to Him “by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving.” Prayer is conversation with our Creator.

Finally, prayer reminds us of our dependence on God. When we pray, we acknowledge that we need His help, His wisdom, and His strength. Jesus said, “Without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Prayer expresses that truth.

Even though God is all-knowing and sovereign, prayer is still essential. It is the means by which God shapes our hearts, accomplishes His purposes, and draws us into deeper fellowship with Him. Prayer matters because God designed it to.
