Many people have been asked, “If you could go back and change your past, would you?” It is a question that often brings up regret, pain, or curiosity. From a biblical worldview, the answer is not as simple as yes or no, but Scripture gives clear guidance on how to think about our past.

First, the Bible teaches that all people have sinned (Romans 3:23). Because of this, it is natural to look back and wish we had made better choices. In that sense, it is not wrong to feel sorrow over past sin. In fact, godly sorrow can lead to repentance, which means turning away from sin and turning toward God (2 Corinthians 7:10). Wanting to undo sin can reflect a heart that desires righteousness.

However, the Bible does not teach that we should live wishing we could rewrite our past. Instead, it points us to forgiveness and new life in Christ. First John 1:9 says that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us. Once forgiven, we are not meant to carry guilt forever. God removes our sins and gives us a fresh start.

Many people say they would not change their past because it made them who they are today. There is some truth in that idea. God can use even our failures for good. Romans 8:28 teaches that God works all things together for good for those who love Him. This does not mean our sins were good, but it means God is powerful enough to bring growth and wisdom from them.

A good response to this question is this: While I regret my sin, I trust God’s grace more than my past. I would not want to erase what God has used to shape me, but I also do not celebrate my mistakes. Instead, I thank God for His forgiveness and for the way He has changed my life.

In the end, the Bible calls us not to live in the past, but to move forward in faith, trusting that God redeems what we cannot undo.
