I’m married and want to know when a social media relationship becomes wrong in God’s eyes?

Today, many married Christians wonder when a social media relationship becomes sinful in God’s eyes. The Bible was written before social media, but it clearly talks about faithfulness, integrity, and guarding the heart. God’s standards for marriage do not change just because we use screens to communicate.

The Bible says marriage is a covenant. Malachi 2:14 calls marriage a divine union before God. This covenant includes being faithful emotionally, spiritually, and in relationships. If a married person starts sharing private thoughts, feelings, or emotional support with someone else in a way meant only for marriage, the relationship is heading into dangerous territory.

The Bible often reminds believers to watch their inner life. Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). Social media can create a false sense of closeness that changes the heart over time. Conversations may start out innocent, but they can shape our thoughts, feelings, and desires, weakening trust in marriage and pulling affection away from a spouse.

The Bible also teaches believers to avoid even the appearance of unfaithfulness. First Thessalonians 5:22 says to “abstain from every form of evil.” If your communication becomes secret or is something you would not want your spouse to see, it has already crossed a biblical line.

God calls husbands and wives to be devoted to each other. Ephesians 5:25 tells husbands to love their wives sacrificially, and wives are called to respect their husbands. A good question to ask is, would I feel at peace if my spouse read every message I send or receive?

Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” If you cannot have an online relationship openly and in a way that pleases Christ, it should end.

God does not want to take away joy, but to protect marriage. Faithfulness is about both our actions and the choices we make in our hearts.
