The Bible mentions Michael the angel in several places and presents him as a powerful servant of God who carries out important spiritual duties. Scripture describes Michael as a leader among the angels and a defender of God’s people. Although the Bible does not give many details about him, the passages that mention Michael show his important role in God’s plan.

One of the clearest references to Michael is found in the Book of Daniel. In Daniel 10:13, an angel speaking to Daniel says, “But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.” This verse shows that Michael is one of the highest-ranking angels and that he assists in spiritual battles. Later, Daniel 12:1 says, “At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people.” This passage teaches that Michael has a special role in protecting the people of Israel.

The New Testament also mentions Michael. In Jude 1:9, the Bible says, “Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil… dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’” This verse shows both Michael’s authority and his humility. Even though he is powerful, he still depends on the Lord’s authority rather than his own when confronting Satan.

Another important passage appears in the Book of Revelation. Revelation 12:7–8 says, “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail.” In this passage, Michael leads the angels of heaven in battle against Satan, who is described as the dragon. The result is that Satan and his followers are defeated and cast out.

From these passages, several truths about Michael become clear. First, he is called an archangel, which means he holds a position of leadership among the angels. Second, he fights in spiritual battles against evil forces. Third, he serves as a protector of God’s people, especially Israel.

The Bible does not encourage people to worship angels, including Michael. Instead, angels serve God and carry out His will. Michael’s role reminds believers that God is actively working behind the scenes, even in spiritual conflicts that humans cannot see.
