The Bible clearly teaches that spiritual warfare is real. There are accounts where Jesus cast out demons and healed people who were oppressed. For example, in Mark 1:34, it says that Jesus “healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons.” The apostles also had authority from Christ to cast out demons in His name.
However, it is important to understand the purpose and context of these events. In the New Testament, these acts often confirmed Jesus’ authority as the Son of God and helped establish the early church. They were not presented as a regular practice for all believers to seek out as a special ministry experience.
The Bible also teaches that Christians who are truly saved are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 6:19, it says, “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you.” Because of this, many Christians believe that a true believer cannot be possessed by a demon, since God’s Spirit dwells within them.
Instead of seeking deliverance sessions, Scripture calls believers to grow in their faith and resist the devil through daily obedience. James 4:7 says, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” This shows that victory over spiritual attack comes through a relationship with God, not through a special deliverance ministry.
It is also wise to be cautious. Some modern deliverance ministries go beyond what Scripture teaches, focusing heavily on demons behind every struggle or promoting emotional experiences that are not grounded in the Word of God. The Bible warns in 1 John 4:1, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God.”
In summary, while the Bible affirms that spiritual warfare is real, it points believers to Christ, Scripture, and the Holy Spirit as their source of freedom. Rather than seeking out deliverance ministries, Christians are called to walk closely with God, trust His truth, and live in the victory He has already given.
