Isn’t Creation Just a Myth?

In a world driven by science and technology, it’s easy to dismiss the biblical account of creation as nothing more than an ancient myth. Many skeptics argue that Genesis is a poetic fable, incompatible with modern science. But is that really the case?

As someone who has spent years engaging with both believers and skeptics, I’ve found that the claim “Creation is just a myth” often stems from a misunderstanding—both of what the Bible teaches and what science actually reveals. Let’s take a closer look at why the creation account is not only credible, but foundational to understanding our place in the universe.

1. Science and Scripture Are Not Enemies

Contrary to popular belief, science and faith are not at war. In fact, many of the greatest scientific minds in history—Newton, Kepler, Pascal, and Faraday—were devout Christians who saw their work as uncovering the order and design of God’s creation. The Bible doesn’t claim to be a science textbook, but where it speaks on matters of origin, it does so with remarkable clarity and consistency. Genesis 1:1 declares, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” This aligns with what modern cosmology confirms: the universe had a beginning.

2. The Universe Shows Evidence of Design

From the fine-tuning of physical constants to the complexity of DNA, the universe bears unmistakable marks of intelligent design. The odds of life existing by random chance are astronomically low. As physicist Paul Davies once said, “The impression of design is overwhelming.” This doesn’t prove the Bible word-for-word, but it does point to a Creator. And the Genesis account provides a coherent explanation for why the universe is orderly, life is purposeful, and humans are unique.

3. Genesis Is Theologically and Historically Grounded

Some argue that Genesis is merely symbolic. While it certainly contains poetic elements, it also presents a historical framework: real time, real space, and real events. Jesus Himself referred to Adam and Eve as historical figures (Matthew 19:4), and the Apostle Paul based key doctrines—like sin and salvation—on the reality of creation and the fall (Romans 5:12-19). If creation is just a myth, then the foundation of the gospel begins to crumble. But if it’s true—as Jesus affirmed—then it changes everything.

4. Creation Answers Life’s Biggest Questions

Science can tell us how the universe works, but it can’t tell us why it exists. The creation account answers the deepest human questions:
– Why are we here?
– What is our purpose?
– Is there meaning to life?
Genesis tells us we are made in the image of God, created for relationship with Him, and entrusted with stewardship over the earth. That’s not myth—that’s meaning.

A Final Thought

If you’ve dismissed creation as a myth, I encourage you to take another look. Not just at the text of Genesis, but at the world around you. The beauty, order, and complexity of creation all whisper the same truth: You are not an accident. You are the work of a Creator who knows you and loves you.

And that’s not a myth. That’s the beginning of everything.
