GREENSBORO, N.C.—People around the country are recounting their memories of former First Lady Barbara Bush, who died yesterday at the age of 92.

Religion and culture expert, national radio host and author Dr. Alex McFarland recalled that upon meeting former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara, he found them to be “very nice, exceptionally cordial people.”

“Barbara Bush carried on the tradition of the first ladies before her and set the bar for those who came after,” said McFarland, who is also Director for Christian Worldview and Apologetics at the Christian Worldview Center of North Greenville University (NGU) in Greenville, South Carolina. “She had the great distinction of being only the second woman in history to be the wife and the mother of a U.S. president, along with Abigail Adams. Mrs. Bush’s commitment to family and her deep love for the Lord shone through in all she did, and she will be remembered for her sparkling personality, her never-ending love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and for her service to this great nation.”

A California professor is drawing ire for saying just the opposite—claiming that Barbara Bush was an “amazing racist” and raised a “war criminal.” McFarland and others who disagree with the Twitter post of Randa Jarrar, a professor in Fresno State’s Department of English, are stating that regardless of her views on politics, her disrespect to the Bush family went too far.

Before making her account private, Jarrar, a self-identified Arab-American and Muslim-American, said she was a tenured professor making $100,000 a year and “will never be fired,” according to the Fresno Bee. The backlash has been quick and strong, with negative reviews also popping up on Amazon for her books.

“For all of their cries for social justice and diversity, this Fresno State professor and others like her show the dark underbelly of the Left, who can’t even be humane enough to show condolences to someone with whom they disagree,” McFarland added. “This is why parents should not send their kids to be educated by godless, anti-American social justice hate-mongers like Ms. Jarrar.”
