More Gen Zers identify as Christian, but many are falling for the ‘siren song of socialism and alternate worldviews’
Dr. Alex McFarland: ‘Christians should not say what they think new Christians want to hear; instead, you must speak the truth’
GREENSBORO, N.C. — A new survey by respected surveyor Dr. George Barna and Arizona Christian University shows conflicting trends among Gen Z members, roughly defined as people born from 1997 to 2012.
“More are claiming to be Christians, and substantially more say they are ‘deeply committed to practicing their religious faith,’ and more are reading their Bibles on a weekly basis,” the survey says.
But at the same time, “skyrocketing numbers of Gen Z adults now embrace socialism over capitalism—up 17 percentage points from 22% to 39% in the past four years… another dozen-plus spiritual indicators remain unchanged—including nine foundational worldview measurements such as their understanding of God, of human nature, and the Bible—leaving Gen Z with a biblical worldview level of just 1%—the lowest of any American generation.”
“While we should be encouraged by the growing interest in Christianity among these young people, the other findings indicate that more Gen Zers may be falling prey to the unbiblical siren song of socialism and alternate worldviews. We need to up our game in conveying the truths of the Bible,” says renowned speaker, author and apologist Dr. Alex McFarland.
“I think of 2 Timothy 4:3: ‘For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.’ The answer is found in an earlier verse: ‘Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage — with great patience and careful instruction.’ (2 Timothy 4:2)
“Our role as Christian ministers and seasoned Christians is to teach, support, mentor and rejoice with each new Christian’s decision to accept Jesus, whether they be members of Gen Z, Baby Boomers or any generation. We should not say what we think new Christians want to hear; instead, we must speak the truth. To young Christians of all ages, I would encourage you to find teachers who speak truth and to avoid at all costs those who have a form of godliness but deny its power.”
Alex McFarland Ministries’ newly launched Revive US events provide life-changing information to everyone from those merely curious about Christ to those seasoned in the Christian faith. Each event answers five critical questions:
