PatrioticOlympic success, media ignorance, and America’s role on the world stage

Dr. Alex McFarland encourages citizens to mull America’s global political standing for a proper context for ice hockey and the Winter Olympics

GREENSBORO, N.C. After 46 years, the United States men’s hockey team won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, an act that typically would bring glory and prestige to the winning team and its country. However, the liberal media are up in arms at the patriotic statements made by the players as well as camaraderie between the team and President Donald Trump, particularly after Trump’s involvement in the crisis between Iran and Israel. This vitriol directed towards these Olympians — now American legends — is a clear lack of ignorance towards America’s role in global politics, according to Dr. Alex McFarland, founder and president of Alex McFarland Ministries.

“The end of the winter Olympics saw support in the U.S. sharply divided across differing views of the men’s and women’s hockey teams, both gold medal winners,” said McFarland. “Some radicals in the U.S. seem to bristle at the Olympic success and how it reflects on our country. It had been 46 years since the U.S. men’s team’s last gold in the sport when, in 1980, it defeated the Russian team with an unlikely, dramatic outcome. At the exact same time, 52 American hostages were held by Iran. In the 46 years since, Iran has not missed an opportunity to directly and indirectly support terror operations — perhaps its supply of IEDs responsible for the killing and maiming of tens of thousands of U.S. service members being the most lethal, and its support of the 1983 bombing of Beirut U.S. Marine barracks killing 241 being the single most notable act of its terror regime.

“Now 46 years later, the winter Olympics serves as a catalyst for U.S. division, raising one very important question… does it matter at all today? U.S. service personnel are in danger today, with some already paying the ultimate price. In December 2025, the president of Iran announced his country was in a ‘full-fledged war’ with the U.S., Israel and Europe. With Iran’s actions over the past 46 years, his words at best seemed a redundant statement of Iran’s position and offensive activities. The U.S. is right to take action now to end a regime responsible for the death and injury of so many, including the recent killing of more than 30,000 of its own people who protested for change and a better life.

“Those in the U.S. who bristle at U.S. success in the Olympics as well as the U.S. taking action against Iran, its lethal nemesis of 46 years, should withdraw and take a close look inside at their true motivations. Lives, not medals, are at stake, but then again, both have been at stake for 46 years. Now the U.S. is doing something about both. Go U.S. Olympic hockey. But most critically important — prayers, love and support to the U.S. armed forces! May an Iran that does not export terror and murder its own people result.”
