Texas flash floods inspire age-old moral conundrum: Why does God allow tragedy?
‘In no way do we trivialize or ignore that, without warning, this world can deal any of us circumstances of unthinkable pain,’ says Dr. Alex McFarland
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The world watched in horror as central Texas suffered a deluge of floodwaters, killing over 100 people and displacing thousands. The nation is particularly heartbroken at the loss of campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, a Catholic all-girls camp located in Hunt, Texas. Faced with such horrific loss, many people wonder why such terrible things are allowed to happen in God’s plan.
“Why does God allow bad things to happen? This is one of the crucial questions every man must ask himself,” commented youth, culture and religion expert Dr. Alex McFarland. “As authorities in Texas are struggling to locate the bodies drowned by the Guadalupe flood, people everywhere are struggling to understand why God would allow such a thing to happen. Couldn’t God have intervened and stopped these floods, saving countless lives?
“When trying to reconcile the reality of tragedies in Texas with the existence of a benevolent, wise God, it is important to think very carefully: biblical thinkers throughout the ages have made a distinction between caused versus allowed. God doesn’t cause evil or pain in our lives, but He certainly sometimes allows it. In no way do we trivialize or ignore that, without warning, this world can deal any of us circumstances of unthinkable pain. That’s just an ‘occupational hazard’ in life as a human being. But we are called to turn to God for understanding and solace during trials such as this. May this horror inspire our nation to get on our knees and pray for our future.”
Alex McFarland currently co-hosts Exploring the Word on the American Family Radio Network, airing daily on nearly 200 radio stations across the U.S. He is also the host of the “Alex McFarland Show,” which airs weekly on NRB TV and YouTube. The “Alex McFarland Show” podcast is available here.
