The Bible teaches that we should seek guidance from God, not from the spirits of those who have died. While Scripture encourages us to remember the faith and example of those who came before us, it clearly warns against trying to communicate with the dead or seek spiritual direction from them.
In the Old Testament, God gave strong instructions to His people about this issue. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 says that anyone who practices divination, sorcery, or consults the dead is doing something detestable to the Lord. God wanted His people to be set apart from surrounding nations that relied on mediums and spirit guides. Instead of turning to the dead, they were to trust the living God.
Isaiah 8:19 also addresses this directly. It says, “When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists… should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?” This verse makes God’s position clear. If we need wisdom, direction, or comfort, we are to seek Him.
In the New Testament, the focus remains the same. First Timothy 2:5 says there is one mediator between God and mankind, Jesus Christ. Christians do not need ancestors, saints, or spirits to stand between them and God. Through Christ, we have direct access to the Father in prayer.
The Bible does teach respect for those who came before us. Hebrews 12:1 speaks of a “great cloud of witnesses,” referring to faithful believers from the past. We can learn from their lives and be encouraged by their example. But that is different from asking them for guidance or attempting to contact them.
In summary, the Bible tells us to seek wisdom from God through prayer and Scripture. Looking to “the ancestors” for spiritual advice goes against clear biblical teaching. Our hope, help, and direction come from the Lord alone.
