Who were the “Sons of God”?

One of the most fascinating and frequently debated passages in Scripture comes from Genesis 6:1-4, where we read about the mysterious “sons of God” who took wives from among the “daughters of men.” This passage has sparked centuries of theological discussion and interpretation, particularly regarding the identity of these “sons of God” and their role in the events leading up to the Great Flood.

While some interpreters have suggested these “sons of God” were fallen angels who procreated with human women, we believe that a careful examination of Scripture supports a different conclusion. The most biblically consistent interpretation seems to be that these “sons of God” were likely men from the godly line of Seth (Adam’s son) who intermarried with ungodly women (“daughters of men”) from the line of Cain. This interpretation aligns with the biblical principle established in Genesis 1:24 that everything reproduces “according to its kind”, and it respects the distinct natures of angelic and human beings as created by God.

This understanding is further supported by the context of Genesis 6, which focuses on human wickedness and corruption rather than supernatural intervention. While Scripture certainly affirms the reality of demonic activity and spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:12), the emphasis in this passage appears to be on human responsibility and the consequences of abandoning godly principles through inappropriate marriages and alliances. When Jesus discussed angels in Matthew 22:30, He noted that they “neither marry nor are given in marriage”, suggesting that angels do not participate in procreation.
